How to choose a magnetic hook

It doesn't matter what you need a magnetic hook for, because the strength requirement must be calculated based on how much direct or indirect pull is needed.

Suspension of cables

You must always consider whether what you are going to hang up is sensitive to magnetism. But most wires today can withstand quite a bit, as there are magnetic fields everywhere.

Do you want, for example, hang a string of lights on the terrace, you can just use some of the small 10 mm. magnetic hooks. There is no need for much in terms of strength, as the weight of the cord is distributed over several hooks. And wires do not weigh down as much as e.g. a calendar (see below about hanging calendars).

Hanging plants

It depends a lot on whether you have to hang e.g. vines or large pots with plants in them, whether it is a good idea to choose a magnetic solution at all.

You can easily hang vines up with magnetic hooks. Or e.g. fixing climbing plants with magnets. And if you have a greenhouse with a magnetic skeleton, it is a really good idea to use magnets for it. You just have to be aware that the magnets rust over time in damp and wet environments - i.e. in greenhouses and outdoors.

If you are considering using magnets to hang up large plants with, we would directly advise it if there are some you can go below. Because even if the magnets keep their strength for more than 80 years, before there is a minimal measurable change in their strength, it matters a lot if the plants move, or if they are overwatered or something else that makes them too heavy to be held up with the magnet you have calculated that you will use. There is too much risk for it to be a good idea. But should they hang, e.g. on the windowsill, where they cannot harm animals and people, a magnetic solution can be used. However, you must contact us for a calculation of the strength requirement, as there is no standard for calculating this. But we can tell you that you will probably be surprised at how strong a magnet is needed if the magnet is to sit horizontally and the plant is to hang vertically.

Magnetic hook for calendar

Unfortunately, we find that many end up buying a magnetic hook that is too small when they have to hang up a calendar. We otherwise make a point of saying that an indirect pull means that you have to use a MUCH stronger magnet. But here are some guidelines for what to choose:

  • When something weighs downward, multiply the weight of the item (ie the weight of the calendar) by 4. If the item is larger than the diameter of the magnet x 100, must be multiplied by another 4 - i.e. x8 in total. See magnet examples below.

A small calendar in size A5 or smaller does not weigh down as much as if you hang up a large family calendar, and you can therefore settle for a hook magnet of 13 mm. with a strength of approx. 5 kg.

A large calendar in size A4 or A3 has so much weight downwards that the magnetic field of the magnet is challenged. Therefore, you must use a hook magnet of 20 mm. or larger. But 20 mm. the magnet can easily hold a family calendar. It has a strength of approx. 13 kg., and that sounds like a lot, but it is a strength that is measured in direct pull - i.e. where both the magnet and the item to be hung point in the same direction. With a calendar, you typically have the magnet horizontally but the calendar vertically. And that requires a certain strength.

Difference between direct and indirect moves

We know that it can be a bit difficult to understand what the difference is between direct and indirect moves. Mia has therefore made a short video where you quickly get answers to why such a strong magnet is needed for hanging things:
