Electric car charging cable holder

Mads contacted us when he wanted to hide a cable for charging his electric car. It was supposed to be a smart solution where the charger cable was hidden away and at the same time it was easy to take it out when the electric car had to be charged. The cable had to sit outdoors in the carport horizontally under a half-roof. It was therefore important that the magnets could withstand all kinds of weather. The cable had steel casings, so Mads just needed the magnets to help hold it.

As Mads himself wrote, no easy solution has been made to hide the charger cable for the electric car. It is not exactly something that you can find in the nearest hardware store - and he is absolutely right about that. It therefore required that he set about making a magnetic solution.

By making a solution himself, the advantage is of course also that he could do it exactly as he wanted it or correction; as his wife would have it. The cable was secured with a spring pull, so that the magnets did not have to carry the entire long and heavy charging cable.

This is how Mads made a magnetic charging cable holder

Strong magnets had to be used for the project anyway. Here it was 6 pcs. by Ø16 mm. sunken pot magnets, which Mads initially tried his hand at. Here he also got 6 pcs. with black rubber caps that he could put on the magnets to avoid rust due to the weather.

Mads returned with pictures of his new magnetic charging cable holder for his electric car. Here you see what the solution looks like when the cable is stuck on the magnet (which is hidden under the black rubber cap):

Attach your charger cable to the electric car with magnets

When Mads needs to use the charger cable, he simply removes the cable which is attached to the magnet. So it's really smart. You can see how it looks in the image below:

Mads ordered some extra magnets, as the 6 pcs. initially was not enough. He ordered respectively: 1 recessed pot magnet Ø32, Ø20 and Ø25 mm.

The status from Mads is now that the extra magnets help hold the cable, so it is easy to charge the electric car. In the picture, you can see how little the cable is visible when charging the car:

If you yourself have a charging cable for your electric car (or just a large cable) you can definitely use this solution. If you are in doubt about the choice of magnets, you can always contact us.

In relation to this solution, it has been chosen to insert a piece of pure metal under the black duct tape, which can be seen in the photos. Mads himself had metal lying around, but you can see our selection of sheet metal here.

Since magnetic metal does not rust, duct tape has 2 functions:

  1. to hold the metal sheets firmly in place, and
  2. to prevent rust by keeping moisture and air away from the metal.

You can also choose to use magnetic steel wire and make a spiral around the wire, but remember to use a good and thick quality. And you must still remember to prevent rust by either covering it with tape or by giving the steel wire a thin layer of varnish.
