Plant hanger with magnets

CPH Village has hung up their plants with magnets in their cafe. It gives a really nice look and is a fun DIY project, as you can see in the picture.

You can easily hang your plants from the ceiling if it is magnetic. In this guide, we will focus on how you can make a plant hanger with magnets - and what not to do.

When things hang from the ceiling, it is important that you get a strong magnet and at the same time put it in a "safe" place, should your plant hanger fall down.

When you have to hang your plants with magnets, it is always important to know the weight of the plant and the pot hider. In this case, the whole thing weighs no more than 1.5-2 kg, which is why a hook magnet Ø20 mm. has been sufficient.

In a direct pull, this hook magnet has a strength of 13 kg. But it's not a straight pull, as you won't be able to set the plant up exactly in the center of the hook or set it up without avoiding some kind of movement. It is therefore important that you divide the bearing capacity in direct pull by approx. 8, so you know what the magnet can hold.

What do you need?

• Pot magnet with open hook
• Pot plant with pot hides
• String or rope
• Scissors

How to hang your plants

You start by either buying a hanger for the potted plant or making it yourself with some string. You can do it in many ways (there are good guides on the web). Once that is done, place your hanger around the potted plant. Take the suspension with the potted plant and first attach it to the magnetic hook.  Now place the magnetic basket carefully on the ceiling. Whoop! – and you are done with a new smart plant hanger.

CPH Village has hung a whole planter up with magnets. This is a relatively heavy planter - and therefore requires a strong magnet in each corner, so that the bearing capacity is distributed among the 4 magnets. 

It requires that you have a handle on magnets before you embark on such a project. Here it is also about which ropes/steel wires are used and how they are attached to the planter.
