Make your own magnetic spice rack for your kitchen. All you need is some small jars with lids (they don't have to be spice jars but can also be small jam jars or mustard jars), and then you need some power magnets. The spices can then be mounted on a magnetic steel plate, the refrigerator or other magnetic surfaces.

Read this FAQ post before you start making the rack - then you will be well prepared, even though it is easy.
Important info about spice jars on the refrigerator
If you want to put your spice racks on the refrigerator, you should be aware that the racks can fall to the floor if you close the refrigerator door hard, or if you accidentally hit them with your arm or similar, because they are more exposed to shock than, for example, on a steel plate on the kitchen counter or on the wall. It is especially not recommended to hang your spices on the refrigerator if you have a stone floor in the kitchen, where the jars cannot withstand hitting the floor at high speed.
Magnetic spice rack DIY
It is quite easy to make your own magnetic spice storage regardless of whether the lids are made of metal or plastic. However, it is easiest if the lids are magnetic (made of metal), because then you do not have to use glue and sandpaper, and your spice storage is ready in less than an hour.

Jars with magnetic metal lids:
If the lids on your spice jars are made of magnetic metal, you will need the following:
- Small jars with lids
- Power magnets strength 3.9 kg.
- Stickers
Glass with plastic lids:
If the lids on your spice jars are not magnetic, you will need the following:
- Small jars with lids,
- Power magnets strength 3.9 kg.
- Fine-grained sandpaper
- UHU Max Repair glue
- Stickers
How to do it - 3 easy steps
Once you have those things - 1 magnet and 1 sticker for each spice jar - you are ready for these 3 easy steps:
Step 1:
Unscrew the lids from the jars and clean the lids thoroughly. Place the lids with the inside facing up.
Step 2 - magnetic lids:
Adhere a magnet using magnetism to the inside in the middle of each lid.
Step 2 - non-magnetic lids:
Scratch one side of each magnet very lightly with fine-grained sandpaper (the side you want to put glue on) and glue a magnet to each lid. Let the glue dry for at least 24 hours.
Step 3:
Place a sticker on top of each magnet so that it covers the magnet. You are now ready to fill the jars with spices.
Storing spices
Granted, we are experts on magnets and not spices, but we still want to give you a few tips for storing spices:
- Keep your spice rack out of direct sunlight
- Avoid direct contact between magnets and spices
- Screw the magnetic lids on tightly - this will make the spices last longer
- Keep track of "best before" dates to avoid clumps in the spice jar
There are certainly a lot of other good tips for storing spices. These are just some for setting up your magnetic spice rack.
