Erasing hard drives using magnets

Sletning af harddisk med magnet

Did you know that you can erase a hard drive using a magnet? One of our customers helped us test different magnets for wiping and deleting hard drives when they are to be discarded.

We had done a lot of research before the experiment to find out other people's experiences with the need for N values and other factors that influence the choice of magnet.

Strong magnet for erasing hard drives

We concluded that a 30x15 mm. magnet could be a good bet for the task, and it worked. But one successful attempt does not make us completely satisfied - we want to make sure that the solution really works and that we did not just get lucky, so when another customer contacted us to find a solution for a workshop's quick deletion of used hard drives, it was very obvious to test it again and the magnet of choice was once again the 30x15 mm. neodymium magnet.

The result

It worked - again! So now we are ready to pass the tip on to others who need to delete the contents from hard drives quickly and efficiently.

Find the magnets at the bottom of the page below the text.

We cannot guarantee effectiveness

Obviously, we cannot guarantee that it will also work on your hard drive, as there may be conditions that are different from the tests that have been performed with the 30x15 magnets. You may have a hard drive that runs on a new technology that we are not familiar with or have not tested on. This means that you have to make sure afterwards that the hard drive is actually empty, but if you put the magnet directly on a stripped hard drive (a hard drive that is not in a computer or has other extra wrapping/protection), it should work quickly and efficiently.
