Fastening the wheel cover on the caravan

A customer approached us as he did not want to use snap locks to secure the cover over the wheel of the caravan. A cover with press locks cannot be regulated, but magnets can handle that. We were sent this image:

Magnets for attaching wheel covers on caravans

So we have tested solutions and here is what we came up with.

Magnet as snap lock

strong>

The caravan had already fitted push locks with screws, so we could replace the push lock itself with recessed pot magnets. In consultation with the customer, we chose a diameter as close as possible to the diameter of the push lock - a Ø16 mm. recessed pot magnet.

Into the wheel cover itself we have sewn a sy-i magnet of 18x2 mm. to have a bit of surface to move around with - it makes the solution slightly more flexible and stronger than a 12x2 mm. sew-in magnet; but the smaller magnet of 12x2 mm. can also be used. Should the solution be even stronger and more flexible, you can consider a oblong power magnet of 25x15x6 mm. instead. It gives you more adjustment options with the wheel cover.

Note that the magnets without rubber coating or plastic cover are not rust-free. However, it does not affect the strength - it is purely visual, and surface rust can in most cases be removed with fine-grained sandpaper or steel wool.

To give the solution the greatest strength, we chose to use magnets on both surfaces ; i.e. on the caravan and in the cover.

You can also choose metal plates

If the need for strength is less, you can choose to replace the recessed pot magnet with a recessed metal plate that is magnetic (but not a magnet per se). It could, for example, be a Ø12 mm. sheet metal. It is put on the caravan, where the screw for the pressure lock is, and then it is combined with a magnet sewn into the cover itself.

NOTE! It is necessary to use a magnet with the sheet metal as metal to metal is not magnetic.

Distance is an important factor

Do you have a thick wheel cover?

You should be aware that the magnetic strength is reduced with distance: the longer the distance between magnet and magnet or magnet and metal plate, the more the strength is reduced. So a thick cover necessitates the use of magnet to magnet, as a magnetic field then comes from both sides (as opposed to magnet to metal). And then you have to remember that a flat surface provides better conditions for the magnetism, so make sure to smooth out the fabric as much as possible when you sew magnets into the fabric.
