Erasing hard drive with magnet

Did you know that you can erase a hard drive using a magnet? One of our customers has helped us test magnets for erasing hard drives when they are to be discarded.

We had done a lot of research before the trial to find out other people's experiences with the need for N values and other factors that influence the choice of magnet.

Strong magnet for erasing hard drives

We came to the conclusion that a 30x15 mm. magnet could be a good bet for a strong magnet for the task, and it worked. But one successful trial doesn't make us completely satisfied - we want to be sure that the solution really works and that we haven't just been lucky. So when another customer contacted us to find a solution for a workshop with quick deletion of used hard drives, it was very obvious to test it again and the choice again fell on a 30x15 mm. neodymium magnet.

The result?

It worked again! So now we are ready to pass the tip on to others who need to erase the contents from hard drives quickly and efficiently.

Destroy mobile phone or hard disc

Be carefull that you don't destroy your computer or mobile phone by accident as there is no way back, if you succeed with erasing data with a magnet. Therefor, only use magnets on your hard disc or phone if you really want to delete data.

You will find the magnet here:

We cannot guarantee anything

Obviously, we cannot guarantee that it will also work on your hard drive, as there may be conditions that are different from the tests that have been carried out with the 30x15 magnets, or as you may have a hard drive, which runs with a new technique that we are not familiar with or have not tested on. So you have to make sure afterwards that the hard drive is actually empty.

But if you put the magnet directly on a stripped hard drive (a hard drive that is not in a computer or has other extra wrapping/protection) or on your open phone, it should work quickly and efficiently.
