Bente contacted us when she wanted to get some stronger magnets for her homemade cork stopper fridge magnets with small plants in them. Bente had bought magnetic tape in a hobby shop and it didn't turn out very well, as it could be seen when the cork stopper was hung up .
Bente therefore contacted our customer service, who recommended our power magnets in 8x1 mm. It was important to Bente that the magnets could easily hold and at the same time were not particularly high (they had to be as flat as possible).
It is a really fun idea to reuse corks from your favorite wines. Maybe you can also be lucky to find someone who has collected a lot that you can get for free.
It is actually very easy to make these DIY cork stopper fridge magnets, so you can easily make Bente the art after.
You need to use:
Which corks can I use?
You can use almost all types of corks, but we still have a few good tips from Bente.
It can be a bit difficult to get a plant in a champagne cork (as it is not very tall) - so we would not recommend that for you. However, it may be that you have found some corks with nice motifs. Bente can recommend the cork from the wine "Why Not" - as it is a few mm larger, so there is room for the plant. Visually, it also looks pretty good with the text "Why not" when they hang on the fridge.
A little bonus info: Bente can also sign that the wine is quite good, so it's win- win.
How to make cork fridge magnets yourself:
You start by cutting down the cork, here approx. 2-3 mm. from the edge of the cork (depending on the size of your corks). Here you must slowly remove small pieces of cork with the knife. You can use e.g. an awl to make the hole bigger. After you have removed approx. 5 mm., you can quietly take your herb knife down into the hole and loosen the cork. Here, the hole must be between 2-3 cm deep in total, so that there is room for both soil and plant.
Now you need to glue the magnet on the back. Bente used here power magnet 8x1 mm., which can easily carry both corks, earth & plant.
Here we recommend using a super glue, so that you are sure that the magnet is firmly attached. Apply a little glue to both the cork and the magnet and wait until it is completely dry.
Here you actually have to wait approx. 24 hours before the glue has hardened through. Bente also thinks it was a bit difficult to wait, but it is important so that the magnet does not fall off again.
When you have completely finished your cork pots, you must pour a little soil into the hole. Here, Bente can recommend that you use tweezers for the purpose. Now put a small plant in the ground - and fill if necessary. a little soil in. Then water the plant a little bit. That corresponds to approx. 4-5 drops of water.
If your plant needs a little "support", Bente can recommend you use a toothpick.
Now you are completely done with your homemade cork- magnets and can hang them on the fridge.
What other magnets can you use?
It is definitely best to use small strong power magnets for the corks . The weight of the plant, soil and cork is approx. 24 grams, so you can also use our power magnet 6x1 mm. , if you want a smaller magnet. We recommend that you find a magnet with a strength of min. 300 g., so you are sure that the cork will not fall down.
Although magnetic tape could seem to be an easy solution, we cannot recommend that you use it. Our gray self-adhesive magnetic tape does not work very well for round plugs. It works better on a flat surface, as you get the most magnetism possible.
