Capsule fridge magnets

In this guide, we tell you how to turn capsules into homemade fridge magnets. We ourselves have been in the process of testing both power magnets and magnetic tape in this DIY project and can therefore give you the best recommendations.

TIP: You can reuse capsules from beer and soda bottles, which can really make a nice impression on the fridge or notice board. You can also turn the capsules over, so you can have small pictures inside them. The choice is yours.

Teaser: small power magnets are clearly the preferred choice - but magnetic tape can easily be used in some cases. We must explain why this is the case.

We have made a small video which easily shows how easy it is to make your own capsule fridge magnets:

What do you need?< /h2>

Which magnets should I choose?

On the capsules we tested both power magnet 6x2 mm., power magnet 10x2 mm. and magnetic tape in 19 mm. with self-adhesive. Here we tested both by placing the magnet or magnetic tape on the front (where the logo is) and on the back with a piece of cork inside.

The result of the test was clear: 6x2 mm. was the best bet! The strength of 680 g is perfect for the project. Whether you placed the magnet on the front or the back of the capsule, the magnet was not too strong and could easily hold a few pieces of paper. Power magnet 10x2 mm. you should only choose if you need to use your new capsule magnets to hold many pieces of paper. The carrying capacity is approx. 1.2 kg. i.e. you get almost twice as much strength as if you choose the magnet in 6x2 mm. The magnetic tape (19mm.) was very weak when placed on the back with a piece of cork underneath, but worked fine on the front. So you can easily use the other magnets - however, it depends on whether you need to use the front or the back of the capsule.

Why not ferrite magnets? In comparison to power magnets and magnetic tape, ferrite magnets are more fragile and can therefore break more easily. Therefore, the choice fell on testing power magnets and magnetic tape.

If you are going to use the capsules for your glass board, you should preferably have magnets with a load capacity of min. 2.5 kg.

How to make capsules as fridge magnets:

We have described the 2 methods, as there is a difference in whether you have to use front or back of the capsule. We describe here the methods exclusively using glue and magnets - as it was the best method.

Smooth surfaces to be glued must first be sanded with fine-grained sandpaper. This means that the magnet and the capsule must be scratched before you start.

We ourselves think that the finished result was very good. You should therefore not be deceived by a picture of our new capsule magnets for the fridge:

Make your own capsule fridge magnets

Method 1: You use the front of the capsule

When the front side is used, the depression in the capsule must be filled so that there is direct contact with the magnetic surface. Here we have used a piece of cork to fill in. If you don't have an old wine cork, you can easily use something else, e.g. a piece of wood.

Start by cutting your corks so that you get pieces that are 3-4mm each. in thickness. Here it is important to use a sharp knife (e.g. a bread knife). It must be ensured that when it is placed in the capsule, there is approx. 1 mm. to the edge.

2) Now apply a dab of glue to the capsule and press a piece of wine cork down. Let it dry a bit (preferably 5 min.)

3) Now put a bit of glue on the piece of cork and carefully place the magnet with either tweezers or your fingers. If you have used your fingers, wash them quickly with soap so that no glue remains.

4) Now put your new fridge magnets away and wait approx. 24 hours before using your new capsule magnets.

Method 2: You use the back of the capsule

1) Cut out your favorite pictures so that they are 3 cm in diameter. It fits perfectly with the size of a standard capsule on most beer and soda capsules.

2) Now apply a dab of glue in the capsule and press your image down (without damaging it). Let it dry for approx. 5 minutes before continuing.

3) Now turn the capsule over and put a dab of glue on the front. Feel free to use tweezers to avoid getting glue on your fingers.

4) Leave the capsules for about 24 hours before using them on the bulletin board or refrigerator.

The finished capsule fridge magnets

You can hang the finished capsule fridge magnets on almost any magnetic surface and they won't fall down if you slam the fridge in. If you want to make homemade fridge magnets yourself , you can always ask us for advice. We are ourselves very interested and curious about new magnet projects.
