Magnets and sheet metal with self-adhesive

There are some things you should know about self-adhesive before you buy magnets and sheet metal coated with 3M glue:

The challenge with self-adhesive is that it has to work on metal surfaces to be able to stick to the magnets and metal discs first. Therefore, the magnets are supplied with a self-adhesive from 3M under the designation 467mp.

Next, using the same adhesive requires that your surface is of the same nature as metal. - i.e. completely flat.

List of ideal surfaces for self-adhesive

  • Metal (e.g. aluminum)
  • Plastic surfaces (but not PP and PPE*)
  • Leather

This means, among other things, that the adhesive is super suitable for closing kitchen doors and wardrobes (but not wooden surfaces painted with a brush).

*PP and PPE are what you e.g. used for plastic bags, toys and bath animals. These types of plastic have a surface on which the glue cannot harden.

Types of material on which the adhesive does not work are raw wood (without primers), wooden surfaces painted with a brush (e.g. windowsills) and concrete surfaces. In addition, the adhesive does not work on material that has been treated with a repellent or greasy surface - i.e. surfaces made or treated with Teflon, general alcohol etc.

Painted wood - exceptions

If you have a wooden surface that has been spray painted or delivered from the factory in a painted state in some other way, you will usually have a surface , which is completely flat and thus ideal for the glue in relation to curing the self-adhesive. Here it is just a matter of giving the magnet or the metal plate a proper "pressure 16" when it is attached, and the glue does not have time to harden in the form of air penetration from one of the sides.

As soon as wood is painted with brush strokes, it is impossible to give the self-adhesive the correct conditions to be able to harden, as there is a possibility of air ingress, and then the glue does not work optimally, which will cause the metal disc or magnet to fall down easily when weight is applied.

Before using self-adhesive magnets

There are some things you need to know in order to put up magnets and metal with self-adhesive. That is why we have created a very detailed guide.
