How Much Weight Can a Magnet Hold?

How much weight can a magnet hold?

Already after a distance of two millimeters, a magnetic field is weakened a lot and the announced carrying capacity of the specific magnet is down by approx 30%.

How much weight can a magnet hold? The carrying capacity and the weight a magnet can hold is defined by a direct pull. A direct pull is when a magnet is in direct and straight contact with another magnetic surface. How much weight a magnet can carry is measured in kilograms with a direct pull.

This was a short description of how much weight a magnet can hold. If you want to know more about this subject and which materials a magnetic field can travel through, how is measured and how we calculate this, then continue reading.

How much weight can a magnet hold?

It is important to mention that the weight a magnet can hold is measured by a direct pull. As stated above it is when the magnet is in direct and straight contact with a magnetic surface.

Distance, surface and an object between, plus the force pulling down on the object has a huge influence on how much a magnet can hold. When other parameters are having an influence, you call it an indirect pull and this important to consider when you need to choose the magnets with the correct strength.

Magnetic fields travel through…

We have made another blog post called: Can magnets work through wood? The answer to that question was YES. A magnetic field and the field lines travel through most materials. You need metal shells and superconductors to stop these field lines.

The magnetic force travels through these materials and elements among others:

  • Wood
  • Plastic
  • Aluminum
  • Concrete
  • Water
  • Teflon
  • Copper

If you want to see some examples of how strong small power magnets are, and how easy they travel through some materials, watch it on youtube by following this link

Magnetic calculator

We try to make our platform as helpful and user-friendly as possible. So you can see all the specifications of each magnet if you click on the product.

If you need any help, we always try to optimize our webshop and our own knowledge. To make it easier for you, we have made a MAGNETIC CALCULATOR so you can find the perfect magnets for your projects, either at home or at work.

We have also made some video-tutorials, but they are still in Danish language. We have started to make some of them with English subtitles, and you can find some of our videos here.

Never hesitate to contact us. We are very passionate about customer service and are specialized in powerful magnets and magnetic pockets. We strive to get better all the time and are very interested in testing solutions and use magnets in new ways.

So if you have any doubts or questions, we are here to help.

Power Magnets

The strongest permanent magnets on the market are neodymium magnets. Neodymium magnets are actually an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron, and this is the combination of metals, which makes the strongest permanent magnets.

Neodymium magnets are also called neo magnets, power magnets, and even super magnets. We think they are the coolest and the possibilities you can do with these magnets are almost endless. We have written a lot of different suggestions in some of our other blog posts, of the many uses of magnets.

Warnings & Safety tips

These magnets can become so strong they can cause more harm than just a scratch, they can actually cause bone fractures as well.

We have written this blog post: Are magnets dangerous?

Always read our Warnings & Safety tips before buying neodymium magnets.

DIY - iPad holder for the fridge

Some prefer video-tutorials and others prefer articles and so on. Our own magnet ninja has made a demonstration of how you easily you can make an iPad holder for your fridge.

Find the video by following this link

Even though there are magnets in a lot of electronic devices, remember this: Magnets and electronic equipment can be a really bad combination. The electric- and magnetic field lines and forces can disturb or ruin each other's functions, so be aware of this.

The manufacturers are getting better to provide these things to happen, but if you are using powerful magnets, we suggest not to interfere with them directly with your electronics.

When you use neodymium magnets be aware of corrosion. It is not stainless steel, and these are not resistant when it comes to corrode, but it shouldn't be a problem if you use your holder indoors or at your workshop.

You only need to use these following items:

  • Two pieces of wood
  • Two screws (countersunk screw 5.5 mm)
  • Two pot magnets (countersunk pot magnets ø25 mm)

Put two pieces of wood together, so you make an edge, so the iPad or tablet doesn't slide down when it stands on the holder.

You need two or four screws, depending on how you want to put attach the wood together, that is up to you.

In the tutorial-video, we use two countersunk-pot-mangets 25mm and screw them on the backside of the wood. Each of them has a strength on approximately 20 kgs, which sounds like a lot.

The reasons are the indirect pulls, because the pull is also coming from above from the tablet, and is not directly on the magnets. You could do this, but it could ruin your iPad, and that is why we make the holder instead of attaching the iPad directly on the magnets.

So now you have a perfectly iPad-holder. If you want to be sure that the magnets don’t scratch your fridge you can use rubber caps.

If you wish to use rubber caps on the magnets to protect the surface, then you need stronger magnets. We suggest countersunk pot magnets 32 mm with strength on approximately 32 kg each.

This is to make sure that the holder stays on its position, and when you open your fridge, don’t forget to hold your device in place, so it doesn't fall down and breaks.

I hope this little project also demonstrates how easily the pulling strength of a magnet is getting weakened. They are still very strong though, and there are a lot of considerations when you use magnets.

Be creative and innovative

It can be hard to write a good step-by-step blog post about how you can do it yourself. Above iPad-holder for the fridge is mostly meant as an inspiration to use magnets in DIY-projects. You can either use this easy suggestions, or be creative and come up with your own.

No matter what, we are here to help, and magnets are a perfect supplement for DIY-projects in general, so we hope you will share your innovative ideas with us.

I hope you enjoyed reading this posts. Remember, if you have any doubt about the magnets are strong enough to hold the weight or have any questions, we are here to help.

Good luck with your projects.
