How can you glue a magnet onto a bottle cap? To glue a magnet onto a bottle cap, you will need to clean and sand both surfaces. A small metal nut should be glued in between the two objects, using a strong permanent adhesive.
If you frequently have a lot of bottle caps lying around in your recycling bin at home, you might be interested to find out all of the creative things you can do with them instead of throwing them away. With the attachment of a simple magnet, the possibilities of what you can create are visually endless!
Following the popular phenomena of bottle cap magnets that are popping up on refrigerators left and right, I put all of the details and instructions in one convenient place. Keep reading to find out how you can glue a magnet onto a bottle cap to add decoration and functionality to your kitchen.
How To Glue a Magnet On To a Bottle Cap
The simple concept of gluing magnets onto the backs of used bottle caps has become a popular DIY project for cheap and easy home decoration. When completed, these trendy bottle cap magnets can be used for holding photos and postcards on the front of a refrigerator or displaying important information on a magnetic bulletin board.
No matter what you plan to use your new bottle cap magnets for once you have finished making them, there are a few materials that you will need to get started, which can be found in the list below.
Materials Needed:
- Bottle Caps
- Sheet of sandpaper
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
- Button magnets (about 1/2 inch)
- Metal hex nuts (about 1/4 inch)
The first material that you will need for this project is, of course, your bottle caps. You can choose to use any amount of bottle caps that you would like, as long as you have enough magnets to pair with each one.
You will also need some small button magnets that will be able to fit comfortably into the back of the bottle caps. The most ideal size to use in this situation would be about one-half inch, depending on the size of your bottle caps.
Additionally, you will need to gather together a sheet of sandpaper, metal hex nuts that are about one-fourth of an inch, as well as a hot glue gun and hot glue sticks to bond all of these materials together on the back of the bottle cap.
Once you have gathered all of your materials, you will be ready to begin. Follow along with these easy steps to complete the process of creating bottle cap magnets from scratch from start to finish.
How To Glue a Magnet To a Bottle Cap:
- Prepare the surfaces with the sandpaper (bottle cap and magnet)
- Heat up and prepare your hot glue gun
- Glue one metal nut to the back of a magnet
- Glue the nut to the back of the bottle cap (not too much)
- Apply pressure and allow them to dry
- Place them on your fridge or bulletin board!
The first step after getting everything you need together will be to prepare the two main surfaces that will be connected during this project. These surfaces will be the back part of the bottle cap and the side of the magnet that you will be connecting.
This preparation will be completed by rubbing the sandpaper back and forth onto both of these surfaces. In doing this, you will give both the bottle cap and magnet a better grip, and provide them with the necessary friction that will keep them stuck together for the longest lifetime possible.
Next, you will need to heat up and prepare your hot glue gun with a fresh stick of hot glue. Once your glue is ready to use, you can begin making the first connection. This will include placing one small dot of glue on the sanded surface of the magnet and fastening it to the metal nut.
The metal nut will serve as a bridge to connect the magnet to the bottle cap. In the absence of the nut, the magnet would not be able to reach the surface that it is meant to stick to, due to the ridges around the bottle cap that make it stick out.
With the use of the metal nut in between the two, it essentially stretches out the length of the magnet and allows it to reach the fridge or metal board, without being left hidden under the obstructive ridges.
When the glue between the nut and magnet has dried, you will add another small dot of glue onto the back of the bottle cap. In doing this, it is very important not to put too much glue in this area.
In the event of an overload of glue in this area, the dried adhesive will push out the magnet even more, and could potentially make it uneven when it is hanging up on another surface.
While the metal nut serves as a connection to stretch the reach of the magnet, you will not want to overextend the length of these two objects by applying too much glue between them.
After applying the glue, you will just need to put some pressure on the magnet and bottle cap using your fingers, allowing everything to dry for about one day before putting it to use.
The Best Types Of Glue To Use For Different Magnets
While the type of magnet that was described in the section above was just a small button magnet, there are other types of magnets that could possibly be used for this project in its place.
As a result, some other kinds of magnets might not react very well to the use of hot glue. This is due to the fact that high temperatures can affect the magnetic pull of some magnets, particularly neodymium magnets, also known as disc magnets.
If you will not be planning on using button magnets for this purpose, you can choose one of the reliable adhesive methods below for a safe and easy project.
Best Types Of Glue For All Magnets:
- Two part epoxy
- Liquid Nails
- Gorilla Glue
- Crazy Glue
- Super Glue
- Mod Podge
- Silicone Adhesive
As you can see, the process of connecting a magnet to the back of a bottle cap is both an easy task and a relaxing craft to complete in your free time. Using all of the helpful tips and steps in this article, your fridge should be decorated with dozens of bottle cap magnets very soon!
Related Questions:
What can I use for bottle cap magnets in place of sandpaper?
If you do not have sandpaper to complete the steps that were outlined in the first section of this article, you can substitute this material with almost any kind of sharp metal object. These objects can include sharp keys, paper clips, or loose screws, basically anything that can create scratches on the surface of the magnet.
Why is hot glue not ideal for common magnets like disc magnets?
Most disc magnets are made up of a chemical element also known as neodymium. Neodymium is a very strong material that is used in a lot of permanent magnets, but it can quickly lose its strength if it reaches temperatures over one hundred degrees, which are definitely given off by hot glue guns.
